Taraka mantra

The power of Ram Naam

Ram — राम — is one of the most chanted names in the world. It is called the Taraka mantra, the Name that carries one across the ocean of birth and death; tradition holds that in Kashi, Lord Shiva himself whispers “Ram” into the ear of the dying. You can chant simply Ram Ram, Sita Ram, or the thirteen-syllable Shri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram — in this counter each tap counts one naam or one full mantra, as you choose.

राम नाम मनिदीप धरु जीह देहरीं द्वार।
तुलसी भीतर बाहेरहुँ जौं चाहसि उजिआर॥

— Goswami Tulsidas, Ramcharitmanas (Bal Kand)

“Place the jewel-lamp of Ram Naam on the threshold of your tongue, O Tulsi, if you want light both inside and outside.”

Scripture

Ram Naam equals a thousand names

श्री राम राम रामेति रमे रामे मनोरमे।
सहस्रनाम तत्तुल्यं राम नाम वरानने॥

śrī rāma rāma rāmeti rame rāme manorame · sahasranāma tat tulyaṁ rāma nāma varānane

Lord Shiva tells Parvati: chanting “Rama, Rama, Rama” — delighting in the beautiful Name — is equal to chanting the thousand names of Vishnu.

Vishnu Sahasranama (Padma Purana)

This is why many devotees who cannot recite the full Vishnu Sahasranama chant Ram three times instead. It is also why Hanuman Ji, the greatest devotee of Shri Ram, is said to be present wherever Ram Naam is sung.

If you chant this form, count one tap per full mantra.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Should I chant “Ram”, “Sita Ram” or “Shri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram”?

All are powerful. “Ram Ram” is the simplest, “Sita Ram” remembers Mata Sita together with the Lord, and “Shri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram” is the traditional 13-syllable mantra. Choose one form and chant it steadily; count one tap per naam or per full mantra.

Is chanting Ram three times equal to the Vishnu Sahasranama?

Yes, according to the closing verses of the Vishnu Sahasranama, where Lord Shiva tells Parvati that the name Rama is equal to the thousand names of Vishnu. That is why many devotees chant “Shri Ram Ram Ram” in place of the full stotra.

How many times should I chant Ram Naam daily?

Start with one mala of 108. Many devotees chant 11 or 21 malas a day, and some take a vow of one lakh or one crore Ram naam over months or years. Set a daily goal and let the counter track your lifetime total.

Can I use this counter for Ram naam lekhan (writing)?

Yes. Tap once each time you write “Ram” and the counter will keep your daily and lifetime totals, just as it does for chanting.

Is Ram Naam good for Hanuman Ji’s devotees?

Very much so. Hanuman Ji is the greatest devotee of Shri Ram, and tradition says he is present wherever Ram Naam is sung. Many devotees chant Ram Naam on Tuesdays and Saturdays to please Hanuman Ji. See also our Hanuman mantra counter.

Does this Ram naam counter work offline?

Yes. After your first visit it works without internet, and you can install it on your phone’s home screen like an app. Your count is saved on your device.
